UK supports the BNOCL in its transition to clean energy.
The British High Commission through the Department for International Trade (DIT) will be supporting BNOCL as it seeks to diversify and incorporate clean energy within its energy supply and production. Through funding provided by the UK government, the DIT will support BNOCL by commissioning of a feasibility study to determine whether any of the existing 200 oil and gas well structures on the BNOCL’s sites can be repurposed for clean energy use.
During a meeting to launch the partnership, on Monday, November 22, 2021 at the BNOCL Headquarters, the UK Trade Envoy to the Caribbean, Darren Henry MP said ‘This partnership is an excellent opportunity to encourage greater UK-Barbados collaboration in the clean growth sector. We encourage the BNOCL to tap into the wealth of energy transition expertise available in the UK. As revealed through the recent COP26 conference, UK and Barbados are aligned in our commitment to diversifying energy supply and reducing the impact of climate change.’ British High Commissioner, Scott Fursedonn-Wood also stated, “We are eager to support the BNOCL with their current objective to transition away from traditional energy consumption and supply, and in helping Barbados reach its climate goals.’ CEO of BNOCL, Mr. James Browne, was pleased that we were awarded this study and indicated that he hoped this is the opening to other partnerships.
The UK, like Barbados, has set an ambitious clean growth target in 2008 to incentivise uptake of clean energy across industry. As a result of these ambitious targets the UK has developed strong expertise in transitioning energy systems to be greener.
